I want to share with our community the hidden jewel that is BREC’s Farr Park Equestrian Center, on River Road near LSU.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Recreation and Park Commission facility’s staff is terrific — the director of the facility, the trainers and stable hands — everyone is friendly, helpful, professional and experienced.

This wonderful facility has become a second home to me and my horse, but there are opportunities available for every member of the family. On any given day, one can take lessons with highly experienced trainers, as well as participate in trail rides and horse shows. The summer camp series for children is always booked way in advance, and the Hearts & Hooves therapeutic program focuses on children with special needs.

Farr Park is home to privately owned horses, as well as more than 40 BREC horses that are available for lessons and trail rides.

There is nothing more fun that saddling up a horse and taking him or her out on one of the myriad trails, or in the indoor or outdoor practice arenas.

Farr Park has 300 acres, including a cross country eventing course. Depending upon the season, you are likely to see all types of wildlife, from deer to bald eagles.

It is amazing that this outstanding facility is so close to the heart of Baton Rouge.

I encourage everyone to visit Farr Park and, if you’re up for it, take a ride. You’ll get some great exercise in a most enjoyable way!
