The subject of payment to college athletes has been discussed for a quite a while. When I was at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (then Northeast Louisiana State College), I was on a work scholarship. To stay on the scholarship, I had to maintain a certain grade-point average or I lost my job and my pay. What would be wrong in applying this plan to the athletes? Maybe the school could set up the rules such that if a player dropped below the gpa requirement, she/he could stay on the team but not get paid. Every student on the work scholarship received the same hourly pay. This could pose a problem for athletes because they put in so many hours and is seasonal.
