I feel compelled to respond to Judge Beer’s letter regarding the statues of Gens. Beauregard and Lee. First, I must say that as a lawyer, I practiced before Judge Beer and have great respect for him. However, on this issue, he totally misses the point.

No one questions the historical accuracy of these generals’ military careers. The problem is that they devoted all of their extraordinary military energies and skill for one primary purpose: dividing this nation and maintaining the slave economy in the South.

I personally applaud Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s efforts because the “history” that Judge Beer focuses on is, at the same time, a reminder of the horrors of slavery and the near destruction of our entire country. That’s a part of history I’d rather keep in the museum, not honor with statues.
