I never really look at my driver’s license. Lately when I do, the thing that stands out, more than anything, is that little red heart with the word “donor” next to it. I’ve listed myself as a donor for years now. I didn’t think much about it until a few months ago. Someone I love was diagnosed with a genetic disorder and needed a cornea transplant. We got the call on a Monday and two days later, we were blessed with a cornea. When this eye heals, we will be waiting for another cornea.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the donor and their family since that Tuesday. Even though we will never know the name of the person who is giving my husband the gift of sight, I want to say, “Thank you.” Thank you for having a heart. Thank you for allowing someone you don’t know to benefit from your loss. I’ve asked God to bless your family. I’ve been praying for comfort for your family as they grieve for you.

It’s a simple question when you renew your license. Will you be a donor? When you look at your license do you see that red heart on yours? If not, will you consider being a donor? Will you allow a part of you to bless someone else? I hope your answer is yes. Who knows? One day you may be carrying a piece of me around within you. I hope I can save your life or give you the gift of sight. So, I’ll tell you in advance: You’re welcome!
