Could there be a better match than Tom Benson in Champions Square?

For generations of devoted fans of the New Orleans Saints, the statue unveiled Tuesday showing Benson holding aloft the Lombardi Trophy is a reminder of the Super Bowl XLIV victory. It marked the comeback of the region from disastrous hurricanes and flooding as much as it did a remarkable season on the field.

Yes, perhaps those same fans might have preferred a huge bronze of Tom Benson second-lining around the Dome, as he often did, but this is more dignified — and it not only means a lot for the team and the city, but it marks the gratitude of the region for one of its business leaders and philanthropists as well as owner of NFL football and NBA basketball franchises.

We congratulate Tom Benson and look forward to many more victories to celebrate in Champions Square.
