Most states would be lucky to get one mention in a State of the Union address. Louisiana got three on Tuesday when President Donald Trump spoke to Congress. Trump lauded the heroism of the Cajun Navy in helping flood victims and also praised New Orleans-based Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Ashlee Leppert for her courage in rescuing victims of Hurricane Harvey. The president also gave a shout-out to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise as “the legend of Louisiana” for his resilience after a mass shooting last year.
It was a pretty good night for a state that gets its share of negative publicity. The arrival of Mardi Gras this month will sharpen Louisiana’s profile as a party state. Trump’s remarks are a reminder that when bad times come, Louisiana residents can be tough, too.
We thank the president for recognizing it.
