Between Memorial Day and the glorious Fourth of July is June 14, and that date, too, has a patriotic obligation for Americans.

Flag Day is for commemoration of the flag that Betsy Ross is said to have made for the fledgling republic in its earliest days of rebellion against the British crown.

One way to mark that anniversary on Saturday is to check the condition of the flags flying at homes and businesses across Louisiana. It dishonors America’s banner to fly it torn or in otherwise poor condition.

We urge residents and businesses across the state to use Flag Day as a checkup day, to make sure that Old Glory, and state and local flags as well, are flown appropriately and proudly.
