Southern wide receiver Randall Menard underwent toe surgery Monday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The loss of Menard, who injured the toe on the first series of the season opener at Louisiana-Lafayette, is the biggest blow to a receiving corps that has already endured a few losses.

“It hurts,” quarterback Deonte Shorts said. “Menard is one of a kind, but everybody is ready to play. I don’t think anybody in our receiving corps really brings the same thing that he brings to the table, in terms of size and how he’s able to get the ball. The closest we have is Reggie (Travis).”

Menard, who averaged 19.3 yards and scored four touchdowns among his 19 receptions as a freshman last season, is 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds. Travis, 6-3, 190, missed practice Tuesday because of an ankle injury, but could be back for Saturday’ game at Prairie View.

The Jaguars have plenty of other talented receivers, but the group also endured the loss of starter Nico Talbert to academic ineligibility before the season, and Mike Jones, who replaced Menard in the starting lineup, is questionable with an ankle injury suffered in the 51-27 loss to Northwestern State last week.

More injuries

Several other players’ availability for Saturday is in doubt because of injury.

RBs Malcolm Crockett (ankle) and Jamarcus Jarvis (ankle), C Brandon Thibodeaux (ankle), NT Justin Woods (ankle), and OL Neako Jones (knee) are all questionable.

On the other hand, PK Greg Pittman has started kicking after undergoing preseason surgery on his kicking knee. He might be available Saturday.

Bus trips to Prairie View

Southern ventures out of state for the first time this season when it visits Prairie View for its Southwestern Athletic Conference opener. A couple of bus trips are available to that game, which kicks off at 6 p.m.

The Blue & Gold Fan Club is sponsoring a bus trip that will return immediately after the game. The cost is $110 per person and includes tailgate food, refreshments and game ticket.
