Southern’s first day of preseason football camp was disrupted by persistent rain Friday.

The weather forced the Jaguars to adjust, but it didn’t seem to put a damper on Day 1.

The team moved from the outdoor football practice field to the Cliford Seymour Gym. The tight quarters forced the offense and defense to practice separately for about one hour each and the special teams squeezed in about 15 minutes.

“Our first day was as smooth as any I’ve ever worked,” coach Dawson Odums said of the players’ check-in Thursday. “We’re going make best out of this thing and try to do better Saturday.”

Southern is scheduled to work outside from 9:15-11:15 a.m. Saturday, though there is another threat of rain in the forecast. Odums said they will stick with their original practice plan for Day 2.

Several players said they were disappointed that they couldn’t work outside, but the practice was enthusiastic nonetheless.

“We’ve been waiting to get in those cleats, but coach is looking out for our safety,” running back Lenard Tillery said. “We still got in a good day of work and (Saturday) we’ll get after it.”

Quinn to miss a week

Willie Quinn, a preseason All-Southwestern Athletic Conference first-team wide receiver and second-team return specialist, is sitting out the first week of practice as he recovers from a jaw injury suffered while playing in a pick-up basketball game, Odums said.

Quinn’s jaw was wired shut and he’s scheduled to have the injury checked Aug. 7. He’s expected to begin practicing shortly thereafter.

Brown sets sights higher

Senior guard Zach Brown downplayed his spot on the preseason All-SWAC second team for a couple of reasons.

“To me being preseason all-SWAC means absolutely nothing. It’s preseason,” Brown said. “Besides, they put me on the second team. That wasn’t good enough for me. I want to be first team.”

Jordan arrives at camp

Starting nose tackle Jaylen Jordan arrived from Houston during Friday’s practice. He was delayed after being involved in a minor auto accident Thursday.

Jordan was scheduled for a physical and the Jaguars hope to have him on the practice field Saturday.

Holes get filled

With three players no longer with the team — LB Treyveon Evans (personal matter), WR Jordan Bracy (left the team) and OL Nyle Johnson (academics) — three others joined the team. They are sophomore TE Dylan Beard (Zachary High and Baton Rouge Community College), freshman WR Devon Gales (Central High) and junior LB Dorsey Bindon (Capitol High).
