Southern will open the 2016 football season with two road games against in-state opponents.

The Jaguars, who announced their schedule Tuesday, will provide the opposition in Matt Viator’s debut as Louisiana-Monroe coach when they visit the Warhawks on Sept. 3. It will be the first meeting between Southern and UL-Monroe and mark the third consecutive season that the Jaguars have played their season opener on the road against an in-state school.

Last season, Southern opened at Louisiana Tech, and it opened at Louisiana-Lafayette in 2014. It’s the fourth consecutive season that Southern has opened the season against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent, having visited Houston in 2013.

In their second game Sept. 10, the Jaguars will travel to New Orleans and provide the opposition in the first home game for new Tulane coach Willie Fritz, whose debut will come at Wake Forest on Sept. 1. It will be Southern’s first game at Yulman Stadium and its first against Tulane since 2002.

The 2016 season is the final in which Southwestern Athletic Conference schools play all nine of their conference opponents. The SWAC will switch to a seven-game conference schedule in 2017.

The Jaguars play their league opener against Alabama State on Sept. 17 in A.W. Mumford Stadium.

They visit Alabama A&M on Sept. 24 before having open dates on the first two weekends in October.

Southern returns to action Oct. 15 when it visits longtime rival Jackson State. Its homecoming game will be Oct. 22 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Jaguars’ other road games are against two-time defending SWAC champion Alcorn State (Oct. 29) and against Prairie View (Nov. 12) in the Panthers’ new stadium.

Their remaining home games are against Texas Southern (Nov. 5) and Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 19).

Southern and Grambling will once again conclude the regular season against each other in the Bayou Classic. The 43rd Classic is set for Nov. 26 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

All game times are subject to change, and season-ticket books are on sale through the school’s ticket office at 225-771-3171.
