Podcast: Southern coach Dawson Odums says the Jaguars "win ugly" _lowres

Southern kicked off its first game week of the football season with a two-hour practice Sunday afternoon at the Louisiana Leadership Institute.

But the Jaguars will become night owls for most of their on-field preparation for the season opener at Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

After taking off Monday, Southern will practice at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Coach Dawson Odums and his staff instituted the unusual practice time starting last week to accommodate players class schedules.

Late-afternoon practices had featured several players arriving late and others leaving early because of class.

“It’s a little late,” Odums said. “You wish you could go a little earlier, but that’s the hand you’re dealt. It’s all about the attitude and whether you embrace it. Whether it’s 9 a.m. or 9 at night, at the end of the day we’re going to kick it off next Saturday. We’ve got to get a football tem prepared to do our best.

“It has some pros and cons. The good thing is you get your guys at practice. It’s hard to play this game when you’re not practicing it. To miss practice and go out and play in a game, that’s going to be hard. So to get all your guys to practice and have an opportunity to work on game plans helps improve the execution and that’s a good thing.”

Odums said the practice schedule is a work in progress. Nothing is set beyond this week.

“We do the best we can with it we try to manage it, try to make sure that they have a good understanding of what they’re doing, try to make sure that they’re getting up in the morning, going to class and doing the right things, but it’s a tough schedule,” Odums said. “It’s tough to execute that all season long and think as a football player and as a student-athlete that your body’s not going to wear down.”
