Southern quarterback Dray Joseph threw three touchdown passes to Lee Doss to power the Jaguars to a 40-17 victory against Grambling State in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Southern (8-4, 7-2) plays agianst Jackson State in the SWAC Championship game next Saturday.
Southern drove 85 yards on a nine plays for a touchdown on its first possession of the game to take a 6-0 lead. Running back Lenard Tillery ran up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown. The Jaguars' Greg Pittman missed the extra-point kick.
Grambling State (1-11, 1-8) cut the lead to 6-3 when Juan Vazquez hit a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Then, Southern dominated the second quarter to cruise to the big win.
Jaguars quarterback Dray Joseph threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lee Doss to make the score 13-3 with 12:46 left in the half. Willie Quinn increased the lead to 20-3 with a 7-yard touchdown run with 4:37 remaining. Joseph and Doss connected again, this time on a 30-yard touchdown pass, to make the score 27-3 with 25 seconds left in the quarter.
Southern outgained Grambling State 278-105 in the first half.
Grambling State came back to cut the lead to 27-17 after a touchdown pass by quarterback Johnathan Williams with 13:32 remaining.
But Southern's Greg Pittman hit a 26-yard field goal to make the score 30-17 with 10:54 left.
Joseph threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Doss to make the score 37-17 with 7:28 remaining.
