ATHENS, Ga. — Southern wide receiver Devon Gales suffered a spinal injury during a 48-6 loss to No. 7 Georgia on Saturday at Sanford Stadium, and he is being treated at an area hospital.

Gales, a redshirt sophomore out of Central High School, was injured as he blocked Bulldogs kicker Marshall Morgan on a third-quarter return. Gales’ helmet appeared to collide with Morgan’s shoulder before he fell to the ground.

He was placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance that transported him to the hospital.

Assistant athletic director Trayvean Scott said Gales had movement in his fingers.

“I hope the guy is all right,” Morgan said. “I’ll be praying for him and his family.”

Southern issued a brief statement that said, in part: “Southern University and the Jaguar Nation ask for your continued prayers for Devon and the entire Gales family during this difficult time.”

Jaguars coach Dawson Odums was expected to update the team on Gales’ status as Southern prepared to bus back to Baton Rouge late Saturday afternoon.
