Offensive Player of the Year: QB Benjamin Anderson, Ark.-Pine Bluff
The junior threw for 2,787 yards and 19 touchdowns while running for a team-high 824 yards and nine scores.
Defensive Player of the Year: LB Kourtney Berry, Alabama State
The sophomore was dominant in 2013, making 105 tackles (12.5 for loss) and seven sacks. He also had one interception and two fumble recoveries.
Jackson State QB LaMontiez Ivy on possibly playing his older brother, Patrick Ivy of Mississippi Valley, in his homecoming game: “He bullied me a lot until we both grew up, so this is how I get him back. ... I’m going to get a little redemption for all my life.”
Alcorn State QB John Gibbs Jr. (a mass communications major) on what he has learned at media day: “When I get asked questions and the reporters leave, I’m trying to think about why I got asked certain questions and what they’re trying to get into.”
Alabama State RB Malcolm Cyrus: “I want nothing less than a SWAC championship. We’ve been projected to win the SWAC championship four years straight. At Alabama State, if you don’t win that, then your whole season is a failure.”
