Southern’s home finale against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night will have no bearing on the Jaguars’ quest for a second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.
Alabama State’s 37-23 victory against Grambling on Saturday afternoon at Grambling guaranteed that the winner of the Southern-Grambling game in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 29 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will win the West Division. The Tigers dropped to 7-1 in the SWAC.
The Jaguars (6-1 entering Saturday) will tie Grambling for first if they beat the Delta Devils (2-8, 1-7). Even if Southern loses Saturday, it could still tie the Tigers with a victory in the Bayou Classic, and that would give the Jaguars the tiebreaker and a berth in the SWAC title game Dec. 6 in Houston. Whoever wins the West will face Alcorn State for the title.
The Southern-Valley game kicks off at 6 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
