The Southern defense may be putting the pieces together down the stretch. After allowing 297 rushing yards in a win against Alabama State last week and 424 passing yards to Jackson State in a win two weeks ago, Southern allowed 220 yards to TSU, its fewest against an NCAA opponent this season.

Lenard Tillery had 125 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries after gaining just 28 yards a week earlier. Running back is one of the deepest positions on the team, but Tillery has been the top back all season long. He needs 189 yards in the final two regular-season games to reach 1,000 for the season. “He’s steady,” coach Dawson Odums said.

The Bayou Classic is poised to have its most meaningful game in several years. If Southern beats Mississippi Valley State or Grambling loses to Alabama State next week, the Bayou Classic on Nov. 29 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will be a winner-take-all matchup for the SWAC Western Division title.
