Football season has arrived at Southern.

The Jaguars report Sunday afternoon for the start of preseason camp. They’ll check in, pick up their equipment and take physicals in preparation for the first practice Monday afternoon.

Coach Dawson Odums said there are “not many” starting positions in doubt entering camp, but that can always change.

“We have a depth chart,” Odums said, “but guys can keep or lose their positions. It’s up to the individual. It’s up to them to work every day and get better every day. Everyone is accountable for playing a certain way. If one guy doesn’t, the next one will.”

Southern will practice a total of 16 times during 13 consecutive days before breaking camp before the start of school Aug. 17.

Four key players are back

When the Jaguars practice Monday, for the first time in nearly a year they’re expected to have four key players working out with the expectation of playing in the next game.

Guard Anthony Mosley, linebacker Daniel Brown and wide receiver Nico Talbert sat out last season because they weren’t academically certified. Wide receiver Randall Menard was lost for the season when he suffered a toe injury on the first play of the season against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Southern opens the season sept. 5 at Louisiana Tech.

Home kickoffs, uniforms set

Southern’s home opener against Jackson State on Sept. 19 will have the traditional 6 p.m. kickoff, but the other three home games will start at 4 p.m.

The Jaguars have announced which uniforms they will wear for each of their home games. They’ll wear Columbia blue against Jackson State, navy for the homecoming game against Prairie View, white against Alcorn State and gold against Alabama A&M.

Basketball players to tour

Southern basketball players Trelun Banks and Jared Sam will take part in a three-country goodwill tour to Belgium, the Netherlands and England starting Aug. 6.

The nine-day showcase features five games beginning Aug. 8 in Brussels. The teams will play games in Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp before traveling to Amsterdam to play in the tour finale.

After the finale, the team, comprised of players from several NCAA Division 1 school, will spend its final day sightseeing in London before returning home Aug. 14.

Banks, a junior guard, and Sam, a sophomore forward, were teammates for Class 5A state champion Scotlandville High in 2013 and helped lead Southern to the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament final last season.

Among Banks and Sam’s teammates for the tour is Louisiana-Lafayette forward Scott Plaisance.

The tour is sponsored by Global Sports Academy.

Ex-Jaguar Brock honored

Former Southern baseball star Lou Brock was recently chosen as one of the St. Louis Cardinals’ “Franchise Four.”

Four players from each franchise were chosen by official MLB historian John Thorn plus representatives from the Elias Sports Bureau, MLB.com, MLB Network and the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Brock selected along with fellow Cardinal greats Bob Gibson, Rogers Hornsby and Stan Musial.
