Devon Gales is returning to Sanford Stadium.

The Southern wide receiver suffered a severe spinal injury while covering a kickoff during a game against Georgia in Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, on Sept. 26.

Gales, who underwent surgery in Athens a day after the injury, has been rehabbing at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, about 70 miles from the stadium.

According to DawgNation.com, Gales is returning to the stadium Saturday for the Bulldogs’ home finale against Georgia Southern to “show appreciation to all the Georgia people who have supported me.”

He will be accompanied by several family members.

“We talked about it,” Tish Gales, Devon’s stepmother, was quoted by the website as saying. “I asked him, ‘Devon are you going to be able to go there? I don’t want it to get to you thinking about the last time you were on the field.’

“But he said it wouldn’t bother him.”

Gales had been lobbying to go to the Jaguars’ final game of the season, against Grambling in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 28, but his doctors said that longer trip to New Orleans would be too strenuous.
