Southern will open the 2017 football season by hosting South Carolina State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

For the past 11 seasons, two historically black colleges and universities — one from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and one from the Southwestern Athletic Conference — have met on the opening weekend of the college football season. In 2016, two-time defending SWAC champion Alcorn State will play Bethune-Cookman in Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Southern and South Carolina State will meet Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017. The kickoff time and ticket information will be announced later, but it will air on an ESPN network.

The Jaguars will be making their third appearance in the game, having played in it in 2007 and 2010. South Carolina State will be making its record fourth appearance (2005, 2009 and 2015).
