Five fast takes on Baton Rouge area teams in the LHSAA playoffs

1, No we’re not No. 1, but that is no big deal. No local select or nonselect team grabbed a number No. 1 playoff seed, but plenty of title opportunities exist.

2, Second-seeded University High (10-0) in Division II is the highest seed and best bet to make the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic. Can No. 3 Scotlandville (8-1) make it to the final again in Division I is an intriguing question. Zachary (8-2) at No. 4, St. Amant (9-1) at No. 5 and East Ascension at No. 6 (8-2) give Baton Rouge solid 5A representation.

3, Something has to give in Division II. Plenty of great teams here. The gift for fans will be all the great match-ups. Everyone is talking about a De La Salle-University final. Too bad No. 5 Parkview and No. 4 St. Thomas More are slotted to play in the semifinals. They played in the title game the last two years.

3, All parameters in Class 3A are different this year teams moving up or down to other classes. Though seeded No. 6, West Feliciana (9-1) is still in a good spot to make a deep postseason run after three straight semifinal berths. Fifth-seeded Plaquemine (8-2) in 4A has battled injuries but is another team capable of a team post-season run.

4, Could this be the year for The Dunham School (9-1) in Division III? Being on the same side of the bracket as No. 1 Notre Dame is not the best option. Riverside looms there too. But the match-up would be interesting because 260-pound QB Mike Williams of Dunham is a match-up nightmare for most 2A/Division III teams.

5, Northeast (6-3) gets a chance to avenge a loss in Class 2A. The 12th-seeded Vikings host No. 21 Port Allen (3-7), a District 7-2A team they lost to early in the year. It is the lone all-local match-up in the first round. Central at West Monroe in 5A and Woodlawn at Neville in 4A are rematches of recent playoffs.

Extra point: Southern Lab's one-year playoff ban due to LHSAA sanctions opens up possibilities in Division IV. Fourth-seeded Catholic-PC (9-1) and No. 6 Ascension Catholic (8-2) can capitalize on that.
