Three scores in less than a minute in the third quarter helped make Friday night’s game between host Scotlandville and Southern Lab extra exciting.

In an epic slugfest , Class 5A Scotlandville defeated Class 1A Southern Lab 47-36 in a game that lasted 3½ hours and was delayed by injuries and 26 combined penalties.

Scotlandville senior running back Trenton Charles rushed for 202 yards on 22 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 4, 1, 31 and 67 yards. He also caught two two-point conversions to give the Hornets (3-0) the early 16-6 lead with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter.

Southern Lab (0-3) also got stellar play from its quarterback Quincy Filmore and running back Ty Davis. Davis rushed for 139 yards in 18 carries. Filmore rushed for two scores and passed for another. Southern lab got a 90-yard kickoff return from Charvis Thornton in the third quarter.

Scotlandville sandwiched two scores around that TD return. Charles scored on a 31-yard with 10:32 remaining and Charles added his 67-yard run with 9:50 remaining to cap a one-play drive and put the Hornets up 35-22.

Southern Lab’s Mitchell Turner intercepted Scotlandville quarterback Cameron Armstead to set up a three-play, 44-yard drive. Filmore scored on a 20-yard run to cut the deficit to 35-30. The two-point conversion pass failed.

Southern Lab’s defense held Scotlandville on its next series, but the Kittens came up short on fourth down. Armstead tossed a 38-yard TD to Vernon Powell and 9 yards to Jontrail Taylor in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Southern Lab’s Ty Davis added a 20-yard scoring run with 8:02 remaining to cut the deficit to 41-36.

“I wasn’t expecting this kind of shootout,” Scotlandville coach LaVonta Davis said. “Southern Lab has some quality players and so do we. We’re just trying to get better. We really ran the ball well tonight and our offensive line played well. Our young quarterback spread the ball around tonight. I was disappointed in our penalties and mental mistakes.”

Southern Lab had 16 penalties for 123 yards and Scotlandville 10 for 80 yards.

Armstead completed 15 of 20 passes for 158 yards. Scotlandville rushed for 317 yards on 45 carries. Shedrick Smith added 48 yards on six carries.

Scotlandville scored on its first three possessions. The Hornets drove 74 yards in 10 plays. Armstead had three carries for 25 yards. A personal foul on Lab gave the Hornets first-and-goal. Charles scored on a 4-yard run. After Southern Lab was called for offsides on the PAT, the Hornets went for two. Charles hauled in a pass from Armstead to put his team up 8-0 with 2:59 remaining.

Lab came back with 13-play, 71 yard drive. Ty Davis scored on 1-yard run. Charvis Thornton was stopped by Scotlandville's Tyler Quiett on the two-point conversion.

Scotlandville drove 53 yards in eight plays. Charles scored on 1 run. Charles caught the two-point conversion for 16-6 lead with 8:36 left.

The most exciting play of the first half came when Southern Lab’s Filmore tracked down a high shotgun snap, eluded two tacklers and tossed a 57-yard TD to wide open Reginald Johnson. Ty Davis added the two-point conversion to cut deficit to 16-14.

Smith added an 8-yard scoring run with 4:21 remaining as the Hornets led 22-14 at the half.

Scotlandville’s Powell had two catches for 73 yards.

Southern Lab's Reginald Johnson caught five passes for 113 yards.
