SULPHUR — Talk about making a big bang in your state tournament debut.
Catholic High-Pointe Coupee eighth-grade catcher Blaire Bizette went 4 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs in a 13-3 win over St. Mary’s on Thursday in the Division IV state softball quarterfinals. The game was called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
With the victory, the Hornets (16-7) advance to the state semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against third-seeded Cedar Creek.
“To be honest, I was very nervous coming into this game,” Bizette said. “Everybody knows the type of team St. Mary’s has, so anything is possible. After we all started hitting the ball and got those early runs, everybody really settled down and started going.”
The Hornets got on the board in the second inning when Bizette launched her first home run, a solo shot over the left-field wall.
The long ball was responsible for the two more runs in the third inning, thanks to a two-run shot by shortstop Kenedie Richardson. Catholic-Pointe Coupee exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, as Bizette had a three-run homer, her older sister Ryann Bizette had a two-run double and Sara Welch added an RBI single.
The Hornets finished the game in the fifth with RBI singles by Ryan Bizette and Richardson and a two-run double by Blaire Bizette.
HOLDEN 5, PITKIN 0: Holden freshman pitcher Olivia Lackie threw a complete-game four-hit shutout and struck out 11 in a 5-0 win quarterfinal win over Pitkin in Class B action.
With the win, the Rockets (29-1) advance to the state semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday against fourth-seeded Anacoco.
“It is a good win for us,” Lackie said. “The offense was able to get some runs early and then I thought I pitched well in the circle. It was one of those games when I really felt like all my pitches were working throughout.”
Holden got all the runs they needed in their first at-bat, scoring three runs on four hits. With one out, Olivia Barnes tripled and scored on a double by Emma Hutchinson. Madison Knight’s sacrifice bunt scored Hutchinson, and Brianna Reason’s RBI single scored Lackie to make it 3-0 Rockets.
Hutchinson drove in a run in the third, and Ashley Fogg had a solo home run in the fourth to round out the scoring for Holden.
