Given his size, it is hard to contain East Ascension High offensive lineman Cameron Wire to a small area. Wire said LSU coach Ed Orgeron managed to do just that, geographically speaking.
Orgeron’s pitch during a Wednesday meeting convinced the 6-foot-6, 275-pound Wire to stay a short distance from home and commit to LSU.
“Talking to Coach O did it,” Wire said. “I grew up following LSU and I know the program. Coach O explained to me how I would fit in and that made the difference.
“I’m glad this part of the recruiting process over. Now I can concentrate on other things to get ready for the season and make sure I’ll be ready to give my best to LSU.”
By committing to LSU, Wire spurned more than 30 other scholarship offers, including offers from Alabama and Auburn. LSU extended its scholarship offer to Wire last month.
Wire is LSU’s 17th commitment for 2018 and also is the third offensive lineman in a group that already ranks in the top five nationally.
He is listed as the 40th-ranked offensive tackle in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings. He also is the No. 23 prospect in Louisiana for 2018.
