PRESEASON CAMP: LSU – 14 DAYS TO KICKOFF

CONDITIONS

FRIDAY’S WEATHER: It was 91 degrees, but felt like 102 even before noon, but that didn’t matter much to the Tigers, who had the day off and could stay inside if they wanted to on the last weekday before classes begin.

SATURDAY’S FORECAST: 80 degrees when the Tigers hit the practice field at 9:15 a.m. There’s a 60 percent chance of rain, but LSU might be able to get its work in before the peak rain threat hits later in the day.

COMING UP

LSU will have a normal practice Saturday as the Tigers address what the coaches saw in the film of Thursday’s scrimmage. Sunday’s practice will focus on special teams.

IN FOCUS

Nic Jacobs

NO.: 84

POSITION: TE

HEIGHT: 6-5

WEIGHT: 265

CLASS: So.

WHAT HE’S DONE: Jacobs got his feet wet mostly on special teams as a redshirt freshman last season. Played in 10 games as a reserve. Had no statistics.

AT HIS BEST: Expected to be in the rotation at tight end behind starter Chase Clement. Will be used primarily as a blocker but has good enough hands to contribute as a receiver. Caught a 15-yard TD from Zach Mettenberger in a scrimmage Thursday.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN: Jacobs, who also played defensive end at Many High School, has yet to show he can catch passes consistently. If he isn’t dependable in that area, his opportunity could shrink at a position that also features senior Tyler Edwards and sophomore Travis Dickson.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

53.6

Zach Mettenberger’s completion percentage (30-for-56) in the first two scrimmages. Has passed for 360 yards and has seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

5.2

Kenny Hilliard’s average yards per carry (25 rushes, 131 yards) in two scrimmages. His combined rushing yards are the most on the team.

4

Number of freshmen on the two-deep in the secondary — Jalen Collins, Jalen Mills, Micah Eugene and Dwayne Thomas.

WORTH REPEATING

“I still think they need to be a really accountable group, that group you can really rely on to make every catch. I don’t know if they’re there yet, but they’re talented enough to get there.”

-- Les Miles on the receivers.
