LSU’s Skylar Holloway fell behind 1-6 in the first set but fought back 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the match as the LSU defeated Auburn 5-2 in Southeastern Conference women’s tennis Sunday at ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium.
Joana Vale Costa and Noel Scott upset sixth-ranked Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger 8-5 to help LSU (12-7, 3-4) win the doubles point.
“I’ve always been very positive about our doubles play. We elevated our play today against an excellent doubles team. They are a top-10 team, and it was a great win for Jo and Noel,” LSU coach Julia Sell said.
Auburn is 11-8, 1-6.
LSU will host Nicholls State at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Orellana, Lindelow win Gold Bracket: LSU’s team of Mandi Orellana and Katie Lindelow picked up three wins Sunday to win the Gold Bracket of the Tiger Sand Tournament with a single elimination pair bracket at Mango’s Beach Volleyball Club.
After a first round bye, Orellana and Lindelow defested LSU teammates Cati Leak and Callan Molle 21-17, 21-18 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Orellana and Lindelow swept Florida International’s Anja Budinska and Maryna Samoday 21-16, 21-18.
In the final round, Orellana and Lindelow outlasted Florida International’s Summer Nash and Kristine Monforte 21-16, 20-22, 15-7.
“I told the girls at the end that I’m proud of them,” LSU coach Russell Brock said. “We played some really good volleyball in duels and we’ve asked them to fight and play hard and I think the last match (for Lindelow and Orellana) was a good representation of what we’ve been doing. It’s a big step for our program for sure.”
Tigers travel to Florida for Valspar Invitational: The No. 9 LSU men’s golf team will play in the Valspar Invitational beginning Monday at Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.
Monday’s shotgun start is at 8 a.m., with Tuesday’s final round teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
Five Top 10 teams will be in the event: No. 1 Illinois, No. 2 Florida State, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 7 UCLA and LSU.
LSU-Mississippi State match postponed: In Starkville, Mississippi, Sunday’s match between the LSU men’s tennis team and Mississippi State was postponed because of rain.
The match was rescheduled to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 12.
