Devonta Smith — a four-star wide receiver from Amite — has signed with Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over LSU, Miami and Florida State Wednesday afternoon at Amite High.
The 6-foot-1, 160-pound prospect is the 9th-best wide receiver and the No. 64 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He’s the No. 2 player from Louisiana.
Smith – who officially visited the Tigers on Jan. 13 – had a total of 23 offers, including 11 from Southeastern Conference schools. Smith, a U.S. Army All-American Bowl participant, was the Most Outstanding Play for Amite in its state championship game loss to Lutcher. He caught eight passes for 111 yards, intercepted a pass on defense and returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Had he signed with LSU, Smith would have 24th addition to the Tigers’ class and LSU’s third wide receiver signee. He registered 13 touchdowns and racked up more than 800 yards in his final year at Amite.
