LSU Wins Four of Six Doubles Matches on Day Two at the Wildcat Invitational
EVANSTON Ill. — The LSU women’s tennis team began day two of the Wildcat Invitational in style with three straight victories over doubles teams from the University of Illinois at Chicago inside the Combe Tennis Center on the Northwestern campus on Saturday.
“We played really well in doubles, and some solid singles today,” LSU coach Tony Minnis said. “We faced some really tough competition so I was really pleased with our play overall.”
Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger started the day firing on all cylinders for the Lady Tigers, cruising to an 8-0 victory over UIC’s Polina Guimaraes and Teona Tsertsvadze. Olivia Howlett and Yvette Vlaar then defeated Maria Kovaleva and Hayley Craig 8-2. Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton closed out the morning for LSU with an 8-4 win over Elisa Simonetti and Jana Knoppe.
In mid-day matches, Morton and Burns scored an 8-3 win over Kovaleva and Craig. Wolf and Frankenberger fell to Northwestern’s Belinda Niu and Veronica Corning, 9-7, while Guimaraes and Tsertvadze edged Howlett and Vlaar in a tiebreaker 9-8 (3).
In singles matches against No. 12 Northwestern, LSU’s Frankenberger and Vlaar over Linda Abu Mushrefova 6-3, 6-4 and Natalie Edell 6-4, 6-0 respectively. In other matches, Corning defeated Howlett 6-4, 3-6, 10-7; Niu beat Burns 6-1, 6-2 and Nida Hamilton defeated over Bodine 6-2, 6-2.
The tourney resumes at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
