Both shortstop Alex Bregman and outfielder Raph Rhymes have received final medical clearance to play for the LSU baseball team in its game against Sam Houston State in the NCAA tournament Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday night at Alex Box Stadium.
“Both cleared to play!” Tigers coach Paul Mainieri said in a text to The Advocate on Saturday morning.
Bregman and Rhymes were injured when they collided as Bregman caught a pop-up during LSU’s 11-7 victory against Jackson State on Friday afternoon. Both left the game for pinch hitters in the bottom of the inning.
Rhymes received three stitches to close a cut to his upper lip and stayed at the stadium. Bregman was taken to the hospital for X-rays to his facial bones and other tests. He later passed a concussion test.
Both then passed follow-up tests Saturday morning and are expected to be in the lineup as the Tigers try to advance to Sunday’s regional final by beating the Bearkats.
