Blake Dean, the former slugger who led LSU to two College World Series before he got into coaching, was named UNO’s interim coach Thursday.
Dean, 27, spent the past two seasons as the Privateers’ hitting coach. He will officially take over as interim coach Monday, the school said in a release. He replaces Hall of Fame coach Ron Maestri, who announced his retirement earlier this week.
A nationwide search for a successor to Maestri is underway. The application process will open Tuesday, according to a school release.
Dean, a native of Crestview, Florida, finished second on LSU’s all-time list in total bases (575), RBIs (260) and career hits (332). He ranked No. 3 in career doubles (63), No. 4 in home runs (56) and No. 5 in runs scored (223).
