LSU players report for fall camp on Aug. 5 so we’re counting down to that day with a daily blog series on things to watch during camp. Traditionally, the media has been cut off from viewing practices at some point during camp so we might have to be quick with the observations.

No. 3: Freshmen running backs Derrius Guice and Nick Brossette

Who’s Involved: Derrius Guice and Nick Brossette

The Scoop: When’s the last time LSU’s signing class included two such highly touted prospects who are both from Baton Rouge and play the same position?

Guice and Brossette were in the top 10 among Louisiana prospects last year, and both were in the top 15 nationally among RB prospects. Guice and Brossette combined for more than 3,600 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns during their senior seasons at Baton Rouge schools.

Guice was a Catholic star, and Brossette a University High product. Guice is thought of by recruiting services as being the better overall player. He was ranked as high as the No. 2 RB prospect in the nation among those in the 2015 class. Brossette was as high as the 12th-best RB in the nation.

What Will We Watch Happen: LSU might have one of the nation’s best running backs – Leonard Fournette – but the Tigers’ tailback depth is low on experience. That’s good for guys like Guice and Brossette, who will almost certainly get some fairly decent playing time.

Fournette is obviously LSU’s No. 1 tailback and will likely get 15-20 carries a game. It seems like Guice and Williams might split the No. 2 role at RB. Terrence Magee and Kenny Hilliard, in that No. 2 role last season, averaged about 7-10 carries a game.
