A current LSU pitcher and another many hope will wear a Tiger uniform appear on the Golden Spikes Award’s preseason watch list, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country.
Sophomore righty Alex Lange, off a 12-0 freshman season with a 1.97 ERA, joins St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Kansas) senior Riley Pint — a 2017 LSU commitment — on the 50-person list.
Lange is the reigning National Freshman of the Year and slated to start Saturday’s game against Cincinnati to open a much-anticipated sophomore campaign.
Pint is one of two high school players on the watch list — southpaw Jason Groome is the other. Widely regarded as a top-5 pick in the 2016 MLB Draft and a sure-fire pro signee, Pint touched 102 mph with his fastball in a bullpen on Monday.
Pint was named D1Baseball.com’s No. 2 2016 high school draft prospect, trailing only Groome, a Vanderbilt commitment. Baseball America ranked the high school duo identically in its rankings of high school prospects.
