This is the first in a five-part blog series leading up to the start of the College World Series on Saturday. These are the top five most clutch defensive plays by LSU this season, according to us anyway. While the Tigers offense and pitching led the SEC this year and got much of the praise, its defense has shined in the clutch.
When: April 4, Game 3 at Alabama
Setting The Scene: The Crimson Tide had put men on first and second after consecutive one-out singles off Alden Cartwright. It was the bottom of the ninth inning in a game tied at 4. Coach Paul Mainieri made the pitching change from Cartwright to Jesse Stallings.
The Play: Cody Henry, the first batter off Stallings, fired an 0-2 pitch to short center field, where Andrew Stevenson made the scooping grab and then hummed to home plate, where catcher Kade Scivicque made the sweeping tag in a play that saved the game.
Result: LSU beat Alabama 6-4 in 13 innings to sweep the series.
