Baker Mayfield

Oklahoma senior QB

His case: The Heisman race has flipped on its ear hole, with a familiar sight — a strong-armed Sooners quarterback — taking charge. While Saquon Barkley and J.T. Barrett struggled, Mayfield threw for 598 yards and six touchdowns against Oklahoma State. Bedlam, indeed.

This week: Saturday vs. TCU (7 p.m., Fox)

Saquon Barkley

Penn State junior RB

His case: Barkley’s all-purpose appeal has lost some luster as the Nittany Lions lost back-to-back games. He had just 111 total yards rushing, receiving and returning kicks in a loss to Michigan State that took the Heisman lead out of his hands.

This week: Saturday vs. Rutgers (11 a.m., Big Ten Network)

Josh Adams

Notre Dame junior RB

His case: It was good for Notre Dame’s CFP hopes that it could win against Wake Forest without Adams or Brandon Wimbush at full speed. It wasn’t good for Adams to gain only 22 yards rushing in the face of Mayfield’s offensive onslaught.

This week: Saturday at Miami (7 p.m., ABC)

On the radar: Stanford RB Bryce Love, Jr.; Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph, Sr.; Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, Jr.; Arizona QB Khalil Tate, So.
