LSU players report for fall camp on Aug. 5 so we’re counting down to that day with a daily blog series on things to watch during camp. Traditionally, the media has been cut off from viewing practices at some point during camp so we might have to be quick with the observations.
No. 4: Battle for the starting cornerback job
Who’s Involved: Ed Paris, Kevin Toliver, Donte Jackson
The Scoop: Toliver and Paris competed for this spot in the spring, and Paris appeared to have the edge. Toliver, though, is a talented player who’s expected to challenge for the starting job. He was the No. 1 CB prospect in last year’s class, according to some recruiting services.
Throw the speedy Jackson into the mix and this is a three-way competition among several highly touted young guys. Coach Les Miles, when rattling off his starting group earlier this week, mentioned Jackson, a five star prospect. He did not mention Toliver or Paris, possibly just an oversight by the coach.
Miles said Jackson ran a 4.36 40-yard dash recently.
“We’d expect he be fast enough to play corner,” Miles said.
It’s clear that Jackson will be in the mix at the position. It’s unclear how close he could be to grabbing the spot. Is he ahead of another incoming DB signee, Xavier Lewis, and sophomore Russell Gage?
Paris, meanwhile, is adamant on playing this season and playing a lot. A reserve last year who played mostly on special teams, Paris said, “My time’s now” during an interview this spring.
What Will We Watch Happen: Don’t be surprised if Paris is at the top of the depth chart when it’s released at some point over the fall or the week of the season opener.
But this position might be a revolving door. Jackson and Toliver could both get substantial playing time throughout the season, spelling Paris and pushing him, eventually, for the No. 1 job.
