LSU receivers coach and passing game coordinator Billy Gonzales has accepted the offensive coordinator job at Illinois, ESPN.com reported Wednesday.
LSU confirmed in a news release that Gonzales is leaving, but would only say he was leaving to be offensive coordinator at a "Big 10 school," citing Tigers head coach Les Miles.
The official announcement of Gonzales’ hiring could come as early as tomorrow, the LSU news release said.
Gonzales served as LSU’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for the past two years.
“This is a great promotion for Billy,” Miles said in the LSU news release. “Billy will do a great job as an offensive coordinator. This is a tremendous opportunity for him and his family. We wish Billy, his wife Julie and their two children nothing but the best.”
Miles said that he is going to take his time in finding Gonzales’ replacement.
“I’m not going to be in a hurry (to fill this position),” Miles said in the release. “We are going to hire a great coach with an outstanding background.”
