The game that marked the return of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger lived up to the hype on Saturday.

Georgia quarterback Andy Murray outdueled Mettenberger as the No. 9 Bulldogs defeated the No. 6 Tigers 44-41 in a SEC game in Athens, Ga.

Murray completed 20 of 34 passes for 298 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for a touchdown.

Mettenberger completed 23 of 37 passes for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Georgia led 44-41 when Murray threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to receiver Justin Scott-Wesly with 1:47 remaining in the game.

The game was the kind of see-saw passing contest most experts predicted.

With the score tied at 27 in the third quarter, Murray threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Michael Bennett to give Georgia a 34-27 lead.

But Mettenberger led LSU on an 11-play, 70-yard drive, which ended when Kenny Hilliard ran around left end for a 2-yard touchdown to tie the score at 34 with 12:30 remaining in the game.

Murray then drove Georgia 55 yards to set up a 38-yard field goal by Marshall Morgan, which gave the Bulldogs a 37-34 lead with 8:09 left.

But LSU came back on the ensuing drive to takea 41-37 lead when Jeremy Hill ran around left end for an 8-yard touchdown with 4:14 left. Mettenberger kept the drive alive with a first down pass to Odell Beckham Jr. on a third and 22 play.
