1 KISS OF DEATH
No one can praise and needle like South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier. Asked about gigging Nick Saban for only winning two SEC titles at Bama with one No. 1 recruiting class after another, Spurrier replied: “Arguably they’ve got the greatest collection of football players ever assembled for a college team, which has got to make him the greatest recruiter in the history of college football.”
2 APPARENTLY, NOT TO BE MISSED
Last year here, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin mentioned Johnny Manziel by name just once. Tuesday he didn’t seem to want to talk about him at all. After his second Johnny Football question, Sumlin paused and said: “Is this SEC media days? That’s a great question about the Cleveland Browns (Manziel’s new team). Anybody else got something?” Thanks, Kevin. A telling quote all the same.
3 INTO THE BREECH
With guys like Manziel, AJ McCarron and Jadeveon Clowney having left for the NFL, SEC media days are definitely lacking stars. But for Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott, it means it’s finally his chance to shine as one of the conference’s few returning starters at his position. “Those guys were unknown at some point as well,” Prescott said. “It’s just part of the game.”
4 TAKING IT ALL IN
Tennessee senior A.J. Johnson said it was a tough decision to come back for his final college season and bypass the NFL draft. “The two things that sold me on coming back were that (one), I came here to build the program up,” he said. “The other is, I get to graduate in December and leave with a degree.” He also leaves Hoover with a selfie he took with the media horde behind him.
