LSU soccer coach Brian Lee welcomed 27 players to campus Tuesday to begin preparations for the 2011-12 season.
Practice gets under way on Wednesday for LSU’s season opener against Memphis, which has won the last four Conference USA tournaments. The game is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 19 in Memphis’ Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
LSU will open its home season in the renovated LSU Soccer Complex when the Tigers host Oregon at 7 p.m. Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Admission is free for all nine of LSU’s home matches this fall.
“We’ve all been looking forward to this day as we now turn our full attention on preparing for the start of a new season against a very good Memphis team in a little over two weeks from now,” Lee said in a university news release.
“Our players have done a tremendous job during the offseason in preparing themselves for this day. We’re very excited about the opportunity to get back on the practice field and come together as a team.
“This team has some good experience coming back, which we did not have a year ago at this time. We’ve got a very talented senior class to lead us, but also some very talented underclassmen as well.”
The 2011 team has six seniors as well as a total of 17 either freshmen or sophomores.
The Tigers are scheduled to begin two-a-day practices at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Lee will conduct a conditioning test before focusing on technical work, individual defending and small group possession.
Wednesday’s second practice is set for 7 p.m.
