LSU players report for fall camp on Aug. 5 so we’re counting down to that day with a daily blog series on things to watch during camp. Traditionally, the media has been cut off from viewing practices at some point during camp so we might have to be quick with the observations.
No. 5: Defensive stars LB Kendell Beckwith and S Jamal Adams
Who’s Involved: Kendell Beckwith and Jamal Adams
The Scoop: Who would have thought entering this season that Beckwith and Adams would be the projected top playmakers of the 2015 defense?
Adams was a true freshman last season in a secondary that was stacked. Beckwith was a backup who had been moved from defensive line to linebacker. Those close to the LSU program saw the potential of each, but could they grab their chances in 2014?
They both excelled, each turning what seemed like a small amount of early playing time to large swaths by the season’s end. Adams reminds some around Baton Rouge of Tyrann Mathieu, and Beckwith is a head-hunting, physical backer who finished second on the team in tackles last season – despite starting only the second half of the year.
LSU’s defense will rest on these two guys so why wouldn’t we want to watch them during camp?
What Will We Watch Happen: Most would be shocked if Beckwith didn’t lead this squad in tackles. He’s poised for a breakout junior season that could catapult him to pro ball early.
Adams, just a sophomore, is certainly to be one of LSU’s starting safeties. He’s an aggressive, quick and smart player who seems to be following in the footsteps of other Tigers greats at the defensive back position.
