Another member of LSU’s front seven went down in preseason camp.

Senior outside linebacker Corey Thompson sustained a fracture near his ankle Wednesday and is expected miss some early-season game action, a source told The Advocate.

Thompson, a senior who packed on weight for a presumed starting role in the team’s new 3-4 defense, hurt his leg at the morning practice of LSU’s first day of two-a-days. The recovery for the lower leg fracture is expected to span more than a month, but it is not season-ending.

LSU lost two players for the season during Sunday’s practice. Defensive end Christian LaCouture and outside linebacker/end Isaiah Washington sustained significant ligament damage in their knees. LaCouture was a presumed starter at end, and Washington was a reserve at the Buck role, a hybrid end/outside linebacker in the Tigers’ new defense.

Thompson, a Texas native who moved from safety to outside linebacker in January, started at safety as a sophomore in 2013 before missing 2014 with a knee injury. He evolved last year until a key figure at safety in LSU’s multi-defensive back sets, playing safety in the nickel and dime packages. Thompson started three of the final five games in 2015.

His absence could create more shifting on a defensive front that already sustained a blow with LaCouture’s injury. Thompson plays the F-linebacker, most similar to a strong-side linebacker in a 4-3. The F-linebacker is responsible for playing the run and the pass. Thompson said earlier this week that he’s splitting his time 50-50 between run support and pass coverage.

Tashawn Bower, a senior who plays multiple positions, was competing with Thompson for time at F-linebacker. Bower missed at least the first four camp days with an unspecified injury. A pair of freshmen is behind Thompson and Bower: Michael Divinity, a mid-year enrollee expected to see the field, and Ray Thornton, a chiseled rookie from Texas.

This is the second straight preseason camp that a senior defensive player sustained a fractured leg. Jalen Mills last year fractured his ankle during the final week of camp and missed the first half of the season. He returned for the game against Florida on Oct. 17.
