Ensminger Orgeron

New LSU offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger, left, poses for a photo with coach Ed Orgeron after a news conference Thursday.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron will have a new-look coaching staff in 2018. Now we know how much they will be compensated.

New offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger agreed to a two-year contract worth $800,000 a year, and offensive line coach James Cregg is getting $475,000 in salary in his two-year deal. Greg McMahon, the new special teams coordinator, will make $375,000 per year on a two-year contract, and pass-game coordinator Jerry Sullivan is being paid $450,000 for 2018. Sullivan signed a one-year contract.

The contracts must be approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors at its meeting next Friday. The contracts were released to The Advocate on Friday evening as part of a public records request.

Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's new contract — after a serious pursuit from Texas A&M — confirms news already reported: His deal runs through the 2021 season, the same as Orgeron's, and pays him $2.5 million a year. According to his new contract, Aranda owes the program nothing if he were to accept a head coaching position or "any position" in the NFL. The latter is new language to his deal.

Ensminger's pay is about 50 percent less than outgoing coordinator Matt Canada made last year ($1.5M). It is $475,000 more than Ensminger made as a tight ends coach last year.

Despite Aranda's big raise, the five new salaries only increase the staff's total pay from 2017 by about $125,000. That is factoring in only nine assistants. The NCAA approved a 10th full-time assistant last spring, and Orgeron and Aranda are still searching for a candidate to fill that spot. It is expected to be used on defense, potentially a safeties or linebackers assistant.

The Tigers staff, depending on the 10th coach's pay, is likely to remain in the top five nationally in staff pay. LSU's assistants made a combined $5.915 million last year, only trailing Alabama's $5.995 million. The Tigers had the two highest-paid coordinators: Aranda and Canada made a combined $3.3 million, a figure that will remain the same, given Aranda and Ensminger's new salary.

All the new contracts have similar bonus structures and buyout clauses as has been the case in the past. If assistants leave for a non-head coaching position in the Southeastern Conference or for any school 500 miles from LSU's campus, they owe 40-50 percent of their remaining salary. It is normally 20 percent to leave for a school outside of that radius.
