Defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, a 2017 four star prospect from Lafayette, waited just seconds to commit to LSU.

Offered during a telephone call with defensive line coach Ed Orgeron on Wednesday, Shelvin gave his non-binding verbal pledge.

Shelvin, the No. 4-ranked defensive tackle in the 2017 class, became the Tigers second commit to the class, joining longtime University linebacker Dylan Moses. Shelvin, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound standout at Northside High, lifts LSU’s 2017 two-man commit class to No. 2 in the nation, according to 247Sports.

Shelvin visited LSU’s first spring practice Saturday and “came back buzzing,” said his high school coach, former LSU player Trev Faulk, the cousin of Kevin Faulk. Faulk said Shelvin connected with Orgeron and new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

“It’s LSU,” Faulk said. “There’s no reason to look anywhere else, go anywhere else. I didn’t have to sell him. He went on campus, watched practice Saturday and he came back buzzing. He came back buzzing how things ran.”

LSU is the first major program to offer Shelvin. Orgeron extended the offer in a phone call Wednesday morning to a kid that plays both defensive line and offensive line at Northside.

Shelvin has experience playing tackle on offense and every position on the defensive line, but he was primarily recruited at defensive tackle.

“He started every game for us since he got here as a freshman,” Faulk said. “When we first saw him moving around that summer, we knew he had a shot to be the big time. He makes plays from one side of the field than the other.”
