The LSU soccer program announced the signing of the state’s top-ranked recruit on Wednesday as Ben Franklin’s Alex Thomas signed with the Tigers.

Thomas is the reigning Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior.

“Alex is the highest profile recruit to come out of Louisiana in the last decade. She is a unique combination of goal-thirsty striker and great teammate,” LSU coach Brian Lee said. “I’m looking forward to seeing her play with our young attacking cadre, and I think she can play a significant role in an exciting front line next fall.”

Thomas is a three-year veteran for the Region III Olympic Development Program Team and seven-year veteran for the Louisiana State ODP Team.

The Division II Most Valuable Player led her team to state championships in 2013 and 2014. She was named a two-time district offensive MVP and three-time all-district and all-metro selection.

On Thursday, the Tigers added Columbian Gabriela Maldonado to the 2015 signing class.

Maldonado played in the Colombian Women’s National Team system. She represented Colombia at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
