Austin Thomas, LSU’s director of player personnel, is leaving the program to be the new associate athletic director over personnel at Southern Cal, FootballScoop.com reported Thursday.
Thomas just completed his third season in Baton Rouge, serving in a key role for LSU’s recruiting efforts. He evaluated prospects, managed recruiting events and maintained LSU’s recruiting database, among other things.
Thomas, a Tennessee native, worked on the Southern Cal staff from 2010 to 2013 in a variety of support staff roles. Thomas worked closely over the last three years with recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson, helping the Tigers land three straight top-10 class, including the No. 2-ranked class in 2014 and the third-ranked group in 2016. Wilson left last month to take the head coaching job at Texas-San Antonio.
LSU recently filled its on-field coaching staff members with the hiring of former Auburn quarterback and assistant Dameyune Craig as receivers coach and long-time New Orleans high school coach Jabbar Juluke as running backs coach.
Coach Les Miles has not named a recruiting coordinator, he said Wednesday, a title held by Wilson. Many thought Thomas could have been a candidate for that role.
