Top 5 Players is a five-part blog series, starting Monday and ending Friday, counting down the top five players who have the most to gain in LSU spring football practice, which begins March 7.
Who can gain the most: OL Toby Weathersby, a 6-5, 290-pound sophomore from Houston
The Skinny: As a true freshman last season, Weathersby evolved into LSU’s No. 6 offensive lineman – the first guy off the bench. He was listed as the immediate backup at right guard and right tackle last season, and he started in place of Vadal Alexander at right tackle against Ole Miss.
So, it’s only natural that Weathersby be in line to replace Alexander at right tackle or Jerald Hawkins at left tackle. The highly touted signee – ranked as high as the seventh-best offensive lineman in the 2015 class – has an opportunity this spring to show O-line coach Jeff Grimes that’s he able to man one of the tackle spots.
His primary competitors for the job include K.J. Malone, Hawkins’ backup last year, Maeau Teuhema, starting left guard last season who could vie for a tackle spot, redshirt freshman Chidi Okeke and senior Jevonte Domond.
