Ed Orgeron's first LSU football team will begin the season in the top 15.

The Tigers are ranked No. 12 in the preseason USA Today coaches poll released Thursday, marking the 17th consecutive season that the program's landed in the preseason top 25. Only Oklahoma and Ohio State have streaks that long.

LSU is one of six Southeastern Conference programs in the poll and is the second-highest ranked team in the league behind No. 1 Alabama. Auburn is ranked No. 13, Georgia 15, Florida 16 and Tennessee 24. Texas A&M, Arkansas and Mississippi State are all receiving votes.

Just twice in the last nine years has LSU finished with a better final ranking than its preseason ranking (2010 and 2011). Most recently, the Tigers entered last season ranked No. 5 before tumbling after a 2-2 start. They finished 13th in the final rankings.

The Associated Press top-25 is scheduled for release on Aug. 21.
