Dobson selected USA team assistant

OKLAHOMA CITY — LSU softball’s Howard Dobson was selected as one of three assistant coaches that will spend the year as a member of the USA Women’s Softball National Team Program the Amateur Softball Association and USA Softball announced Tuesday.

The organization has tabbed South Florida head coach Ken Eriksen to head up the team, while Dobson joins Oregon State head coach Laura Berg and UNLV head coach Lisa Dodd as the top assistants.

Dobson, who just completed his third season as an assistant coach at LSU has serving as hitting coach and recruiter. He has been key figure in an improved offense.

LSU track and field teams climb in polls

The LSU track and field teams moved up one spot in the national rankings this week.

The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 6 nationally and the Tigers are ranked No. 8 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 power rankings.

Next up for the teams will be a trip to Jacksonville, Florida, for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which will run May 29-31 at the University of North Florida.

Berlocq, Klizan reach 2nd round in Nice

NICE, France — Carlos Berlocq of Argentina and Martin Klizan of Slovakia won three-setters to reach the second round of the Open de Nice on Tuesday.

Berlocq, who won the Portugal Open this month, broke for a 5-3 lead in the final set to overcome Julien Benneteau of France 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Klizan rallied past Bernard Tomic of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Tomic slammed 11 aces but dropped serve in the final game against Klizan, who won the BMW Open this month in Germany.

Robin Haase of the Netherlands also advanced. He did not face a break point in his 6-3, 6-2 win over Filippo Volandri of Italy.
