LSU men’s golf Chuck Winstead announced the signing of three recruits Wednesday.

John Jonas of Jacksonville, Fla., Chuck Spears of Pineville and Zach Wright of Phoenix, signed with the Tigers and will be eligible to compete in 2012.

All three recruits are ranked among the nation’s Top 100 prep prospects by different services.

“We’re excited to welcome another strong class of recruits that is sure to make an impact on this program in the coming years,” Winstead said.

Wright finished fourth at the 36th Junior PGA Championship held at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Wright claimed the Arizona Class 1A individual state championship on Oct. 29 while shattering the all-time tourney record with a winning score of 15-under par 125 for 36 holes.

Spears is the consensus No. 1-ranked recruit in the state and the No. 58-ranked prep prospect for the Class of 2012 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. Spears, who plays for Alexandria Senior High, is just the third junior golfer in state history to win back-to-back Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championships with wins in 2010 and 2011.

Jonas tied for third place at the 2011 Florida Class 1A State Championships while leading his team to the state title at Deer lake Golf Club in Tavares, Fla.


FLORY SIGNS THREE: LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory announced the signings of Khourtni Fears, Cati Leak and Katie Lindelow Thursday.

All three members of the class will enter as freshmen for the 2012 season and are ranked among’s Senior Aces Top 100 in addition to the 2011-12 AVCA Under Armour High School All-America Watch List.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the addition of Khourtni, Cati and Katie to our program and the LSU volleyball family,” Flory said. “All three are outstanding student-athletes and will have an immediate impact on our program, both on and off the court.”

Fears, a 6-2 middle blocker from Bellaire High School in Houston, was a three-time All-District 20-5A first-team selection from 2009-11.

Leak, a 6-2 outside hitter from Guntersville High School in Alabama, was named state tournament MVP. She led her team to its third straight Class 2A championship. She also received the 2010 Gatorade State Player of the Year award.

Lindelow, a 5-11 outside hitters from Mandeville High School, earned multiple All-District, All-Metro and All-State selections during her prep career. In 2010, she earned Gatorade State Player of the Year.


WYRICK SIGNS FOR 2012-13 SEASON: LSU gymnastics coach D-D Breaux announced the signing of Randii Wyrick for the 2012-13 season.

Wyrick, a Las Vegas native, competes for Dayna Waroe and Terry Gray at Brown’s Las Vegas Gymnastics. Wyrick is a four-time Junior Olympics National Championship qualifier.

Wyrick captured the vault national title and placed fourth on bars this year at the J.O. National Championship, and she earned a spot on the J.O. national team in 2010 after a fourth place in the all-around.

“She is such a consistent performer,” Breaux said. ““We are recruiting her as an all-arounder, and I think she will definitely come in and have an impact as a freshman.”
