News: LSU plans to piece together NCAA regional opener with Alden Cartwright starting first on the mound

What’s At Stake

It’s tough to come back and win a regional after losing the opening game. In fact, it’s rarely done. LSU has had success in these games. In fact, the Tigers are 20-0 in first-round regional games when they are the regional No. 1 seed. The winner is in to Saturday night’s winner bracket final. The loser plays an elimination game Saturday afternoon.

What To Watch

Regional rebound: Alden Cartwright gets his first start since … the final game of last year. Cartwright walked two and hit a batter in a start against Houston in LSU’s Game 4 of the NCAA Baton Rouge regional. He did not record an out in LSU’s 12-2 loss. This all came a day after he guaranteed a win in the game. Cartwright didn’t speak to reporters Thursday – and it probably has something to do with that guarantee. Here’s his chance at a rebound.

Jack Wholestaff: Coach Paul Mainieri plans to use several pitchers in Friday’s opener. Cartwright is only expected to throw two innings before giving way to more relievers. Expect to see five-plus guys get the ball. Every guys is available, and Austin Bain will almost certainly pitch. Why’s Mainieri going this route? (1) LSU hasn’t had a consistent and reliable No. 3 starter, (2) rain delays could interrupt the game, (3) Mainieri wants more options in case the Tigers are pushed to a Monday game.

Bounce back bats: Hitting coach Andy Cannizaro says the Tigers offensive motivation ahead of the game against Lehigh is at an all time high after the loss to Florida. LSU, for just the second time this season, scored one or less runs in a game. It was just a ninth game this year in which LSU has scored three or fewer games. In the games following the first eight, they averaged eights runs and 11 hits and are 7-1.

Know Your Opponent

The Mountain Hawks have an RPI of 239, a team ERA of 4.63 and a batting average of .266. They’re not a real threatening squad for a Tigers team that’s been the consensus No. 1-ranked team for six straight weeks. Still, they’ve won 12 of the last 16 games leading up to their Patriot League tournament championship.
