ATHENS, Ga. — Behind 2-1, the LSU volleyball team stormed back behind the record performance of sophomore outside hitter Gina Tillis to defeat Georgia on Friday night.
Tillis contributed 37 kills and 19 digs in LSU’s 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-9 victory
LSU (6-8, 2-1 Southeastern) pushed its winning streak to two matches as the Tigers took the first set, before seeing the Bulldogs come back to take the next two and putting the team on the brink.
Instead, Tillis provided the second best kill output in program history, and the most in the rally-scoring era as she hit .453 with a career-best 19 digs.
LSU will be on the road against Auburn at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tigers draw with Vandy: The Tigers limited visiting Vanderbilt to one shot on goal in 110 minutes as they extended their home unbeaten streak to nine games in a scoreless draw in front of a season-high crowd of 1,412 at LSU Soccer Stadium.
LSU’s two-match losing streak in SEC play was short-lived as the Tigers (7-3-3, 1-3-1) also extended their unbeaten run against Vanderbilt (5-5-3, 1-2-2) to three straight. The two sides have played to extra time in each of their past three meetings, with the Tigers coming out on top by a 1-0 margin in Baton Rouge in 2012 and 2-1 in Nashville in 2013.
RUNNERS BOUND FOR ARKANSAS: The LSU cross country teams are back on the road heading to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the annual Chile Pepper Festival Saturday at Agri Park Cross Country Course.
The men will begin the 8k course at 9:45 a.m., and the women will start at 10:20 a.m., on a 5K course.
OWENS AND KUYKENDALL OPEN ITA ALL-AMERICAN PLAY: Skylar Kuykendall and Abby Owens of the LSU women’s tennis team will compete in the ITA All-American Prequalifying on Saturday and Sunday at the Riviera Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
Owens is coming off of a weekend at the Wildcat Invite where she won her draw. The junior will compete in prequalifying singles at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against TCU’s Marie Norris. Owens and Kuykendall will compete in the prequalifying doubles as the third-ranked team.
TIGERS IN PRE-QUALIFYING ROUND AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN: Freshman Cameron Andry and transfer Gabor Csonka will make their debut for the Tigers in the Pre-Qualifying round of the ITA All-American tournament along with teammate Simon Freund on Saturday at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
